Because I decided to go back to school right at one month from the start of the semester, I've run into a bit of difficulty both with my acceptance and with my financial aid. I made the decision to go back to school on July 13th. I knew that the semester started August 18th, so I was quick to get the ball rolling. I applied to the University of South Carolina, and immediately applied for financial aid through FAFSA on July 14th. On July 19th, I received a notice from FAFSA that my application had been successfully completed and the results were forwarded to my school. On July 23rd, I received a huge stack of paperwork from the University of South Carolina that they needed filled out to complete my application. I quickly filled all of that out and returned it to the school. On July 27th, I received another form from the UoSC that said I had been selected for verification of financial aid status. I had to have a copy of my 1040 tax form to staple to the back of this verification form. Unfortunately, our tax documents from 2010 were lost when we moved, so this meant I had to contact the IRS. Boy, what a joy that was! I called three different times to request a 2010 tax transcript. I was on hold over an hour each time. Finally I got someone on July 28th. He said I would receive it in 5-10 business days. That is the last item I need for my application and financial aid to be processed. Problem is, we are really cutting it close. If my financial aid doesn't come through by August 15th, I'll have to pay for my semester in full or I can't attend school. There is no way I can pay for the entire semester, so I pray this paper comes quickly and the UofSC can get everything processed in time! I really, really do not want to have to wait another semester before starting.....

I'm having issues too! When I filled out my FAFSA, I completely forgot that my SS card is still in my maiden name...and I filled it out in my married name. So I had to drive to the SS office 30 minutes away, wait in line for 20 minutes, and was told to expect my new card in 7-10 days. Once I get it, the school should be able to correct everything. So frustrating! I have until August 12th.
College is 4++ years of red tape...so frustrating! I hope it gets there in time!
Thank you both!! I'm hoping my IRS information comes soon and I can submit this last piece of 'red tape' and get my final acceptance letter!!
It's "only money". Don't waste the semester on not getting financial aid because you'll get the money back. It will come through in the next quarter or next semester. I've gotten financial aid mid-term. There's no one time to apply, but the school likes it when you do it on your terms.
I'm a CPM and a licensed midwife. I went to nursing school to be a CNM. Now I'm a semester away from graduation in December and quitting midwifery. Acute care for adults rocks my boat.
Oops, the school likes it when you process your financial aid on *their* terms... makes life easier for them ;)
frectis - In a perfect world, you are right. Unfortunately, I can't pay for a full semester's tuition up front without taking out a loan. I'm thinking my aid will come through before the semester begins though! Is sure hope at least! And congrats and being so close to graduation!!!
